blog 14 section 6

In Jewish prayer, God is often referred to as “Master of the Universe.” After reading this section, what do you think this quote means. Really think about events that have already happen in the story that may lead to this important passage. Pick apart this quote, analyze and describe each sentences on what you think it means and why. ( 10 sentences)

"We were masters of nature, masters of the world. We had forgotten everything—death, fatigue, our natural needs. Stronger than cold or hunger, stronger than the shots and the desire to die, condemned and wandering, mere numbers, we were the only men on earth.
At last, the morning star appeared in the gray sky. A trail of indeterminate light showed on the horizon. We were exhausted. We were without strength, without illusions."

I think that it means that god is the ruler of the universe. What else could it mean. It also means that he is the only god there is. There is no more gods except the Jewish one. It was wrong of him to say that they were the masters of the universe. That’s like saying they are the gods and that there is no god. He also tried to pray to god after he said all of that. He asked god to give him the strength to not do what the rabbi’s son did to the rabbi. I also think that god is the master of the universe. I also think that god is still with them even though they have said all of those things about him and he still is protecting Ellie.

That quote is like the real thing. Because to everybody's religion God is the master of the universe. So they mite think that there is no person or other God that rules or is more powerful than there God. The first sentence I think means that there people or whoever their religion is were the big dogs like the top Gods maybe. The second sentence to me means that they ignored everything and focused on getting to one place, heaven. The third sentence to me means that no one could mess with them that they were invincible. The forth one to me means that they finally seen what they were waiting for which was God maybe. They reached the top of the hill and they were weak and without strength and god revived them.

"We were masters of nature, masters of the world.” Would mean that the prisoners are the example of what the world has become. “We had forgotten everything—death, fatigue, our natural needs.” They had become careless. They could only worry about them selves and surviving. “Stronger than cold or hunger” The cold and hunger would not stop them from trying to live. “Stronger than the shots and the desire to die.” The guns and the desire to die would not slow them down, it helped them concentrate on life ahead of them. “condemned and wandering, mere numbers, we were the only men on earth.” A bunch of nobodies, no names, just numbers walk around. This is who we are. “At last, the morning star appeared in the gray sky. A trail of indeterminate light showed on the horizon.” At last, something different, something beautiful, to keep their spirits shows up. We were exhausted. We were without strength, without illusions." Now we must start over and struggle some more.
This quote shows the struggle, the strengths, the weaknesses that all the prisoners have. They struggle a lot of pain, and even the smallest thing like the sun can keep their spirits up to something beautiful to see..

This quote means that they were survivors. He is comparing himself and the rest to God. How great they are just for still being able to live. How strong and powerful they are for them to run. To beat hunger and pain. To be able to run and keep running no matter what is going on around them. They were so strong that no matter how bad they wanted to die they wouldn’t let themselves get defeated that easily. After everything they had been thru they didn’t want their lives ending that way. When he said we were the only men on earth, to me it meant that they were the only real men. The ones that had been thru everything. The ones that had really suffered and lived thru it all the only ones that had overcome everything.

I think that the quote refers to being the highest master on earth. It kind of tells me that they could do anything to safe the world. But if they did they wouldn’t be suffering. To me I think that the only master to me is god but in the book it refers to the people, they cant do or be a master because they don’t do miracles or make nature look different god does all that for us. In this particular chapter what has happened is that the people have been running for 42 hours they cant stop at all they haven't eat, sleep, or rest they are running in the dark and it is very cold for them because since they are running in the snow.[ (example) my wounded no longer hurt me. I must have been complety frozen.] when they were running they were encouraging each other to run faster there was a remark were they had said ]keep going! we are getting there! only a few more hours to get there !

I think what each sentence and quote in this paragraph try to say is how they have evolved. “we are masters of nature , masters of the world” what he means by this is that no longer is god the master of the nature or the world but it is them individually since god no longer applies to there life they control what nature is the control there world they live in not god. “we have forgotten everything death fatigue , our natural needs.” by this he refers that they are so beat hungry that there minds have pretty much gone to the edge they no longer think or need they no longer remember what it is like to need to want they just see the moment there in. not even death matters. Stronger than cold or hunger, stronger than the shots and the desire to die, condemned and wandering, mere numbers, we were the only men on earth.” this means that they no longer see death or cold nor hunger as a bad thing they do not care for what they feel for they have gone beyond there basic needs they just don’t give a damn about anything anymore not even the relief of death. At last, the morning star appeared in the gray sky. A trail of indeterminate light showed on the horizon. We were exhausted. We were without strength, without illusions." by the time they arrived they had nothing they were just tired and without hope with out ideas they were pretty much worn out skeletons empty shells. Or so I think……..

I think that this quote has many meanings to it. I mean they have been trough a lot and they don’t think clearly. They are running like Eli has his leg hurt so he is lot’s of pain. I think that what Eli means by “We had forgotten everything—death, fatigue, our natural needs” he has way more things in his head like he doesn't want to think about all that bad things are going to get to him and make him quite. I think that Eli cares to much about his dad that he won’t just give up and let his dad go trough it alone and suffer. I think that what Eli is doing is smart because if Eli just concentrates on what is going on around him he will go crazy. I think that if I was in Eli’s place I would do the same I would just rest and think about nothing else because it is too sad to think about. What I think that Eli also means by “Stronger than cold or hunger, stronger than the shots and the desire to die,” is that he thinks that there actually thing that mean more then all this. I mean he is in a camp that wants to make this people’s life miserable and I think that their plan worked. I think that because you could tell by the words that Eli uses that he is in pain and that he hates life and is only alive for his dad.

I think this quote means that their trying to say that know that god is not their with them. They are trying to be the master of the world which it means that they are going to their own god decide what they will like to do with their life. The quote is trying to say that they are not feeling anything no more for all the things they have suffer. They forgot what was to feel the fear of died, the fatigue of when they are working hard or running a lot, and the natural needs which it means get hungry, trusty, and go to the bathroom like the normal people do. With this quote it means that they don’t care if they died or they live because they have suffer to much to care about their life anymore. They are so tired that they don’t have any illusion or any faith of their own life. It all means that they don’t even feel the hunger or their personal things they have to do. They are tired of living all this pain that all the things that the SS do to them they don’t even feel them because they have done a lot of things.

That they had to run a lot and they where running for a long time with out stopping. They were running for 42 miles non stop. The father and him was in the line together. They were thinking what was going to happen to them. They were running to getter in a group. There was some one bigger them it was the god. When they got on top of the hill they must of goting tried and they must of gotting save by a god. Some must of struggled and die because of the weather they were running throw. The weather was snowing. They did not had have any clothing that’s way I think that some of them must of pass away. They had only bread and coffee to drink and eat . They did not have much to give out to eat or they had to share with every body that was there and it was hard for them because they had so many people. It was so small were it can only hold a little people and they cramed they.

I think that this quote “master of the universe”, which they used to refer to god, means that god had or has the power to do anything he wants. He is the ultimate power and for that reason he could manipulate things at his will. I also think that with all the events that have been happening that they don’t think he could be the master of the universe because he has the power to manipulate things and he did the wrong manipulations, meaning, he choose to let the people die, he let the Germans get killed. When he says that they were masters of the world and how they were the only men on earth, they are talking about how they tried and did the impossible. They held on to life, they stuck to it like glue. They were meant to die, but they didn’t, they held on and didn’t fall, they didn’t let themselves get trampled and they sure didn’t let themselves get shot. They held it when they had to go to the bathroom and they held themselves when they were hungry. They fought against everything with all the energy they had (which wasn’t a lot) and they gave a good tug at life to try to stick with it.

In the quote that I had read in the beginning it was relating us the “people” that we are god. So when it had said that we are masters of nature we are the god of nature. They pay no mind to anything that is their “natural” needs. They fight off everything that bothers them. They are the only ones on the earth or that’s how they picture themselves as. Towards the end of the quote it talks about how they finally come to an end. They finally reach their destination and are exhausted and tired without any more strength to move anymore. I think that their bodies don’t have anymore strength, but there minds do and that’s what keeps them going. Cause in there eyes there G0D. Nobody can stop them but themselves.

In This section of Night, Eliezer has once more spoken on mans authority over this world he says on page 93 “We were masters of nature, masters of the world.” This one segment speaks volumes on his know extinguished religion. To me Elie is thinking that god has no authority in the world and that man is his own god because there is no after life this is their one life, here on earth. Though strong words were uttered against god it was not the first time this once strong follower has questioned God’s overall power on page 75 it read, “I had ceased to be anything but ashes, yet I felt myself to be stronger than the Almighty.” Even though Elie is in a weekend state he still thinks that he has more control over the world than god. He more than likely feels that the only thing standing between life and death is his will not God’s. In the next section of the quote it reads, “We had forgotten everything-death, fatigue, our natural needs. Stronger than cold or hunger, stronger than the shots and the desire to die, condemned and wandering, mere numbers , we were only men on earth.” The first sentence of the quote is how the exhaustion had pushed them so hard that they were just automatons wandering the world just living with out a purpose or a meaning. The second part I want to focus on “mere numbers”, They were each given a number this number represented them it was all they had their name only existed in the eyes of their fellow prisoners and not in the eye of the captures, so this might mean that they were no longer the people they were before but the person who is willing to cut out family and memories just to survive. The last little part we were only men on earth could mean that there was no after life sense there was no god as I briefly explained a little earlier in my interpretation of the first sentence of the selected quote.

I think that the quote means that the gods did not what nothing to do with them. His leg had gotting hurt and he was in pain. He cares to much about his dad and he needs to stop think about him to much. He can handle himself . There both are in camp and they cant be together. Its going to be hard for him. It already heard for him. The dad doesn’t what the for him to weary about him just stay strong. They just need to just think to find away out. The forth one to me means that they finally seen what they were waiting for which was God maybe. it was cold for him he was saying. he was going throw lot of pain think about his father and when he had gotting hurt.

Master of the Universe” this quote means that God is referred as the master of nature, and master of world. He has the power of all the obstacles humans go through. Elie is thinking that god has no authority in the world. When Elie said that they were masters of nature, I think he meant that he was already immune to the conditions he had to face. So he knew how to deal with conditions that nature threw at him. I think that they were determined to live, other than throwing in the towel. Being stronger than hunger and the cold.
