Blog 8 air raids

During an Allied air raid on Buna, during which every prisoner is supposed to be confined to his or her block. As the guards go for cover, everything is basically unguarded, even the eletric barb wire. The bombing lasts for over an hour.
This was another oppurtunity for them to run, Why didn't the prisoners make an escape? What was on their minds?
The prisoners, however, are filled with hope and joy because the rumors they have heard about German defeat on various fronts seem real and believable now. Elie's thoughts during the raid: "If it could only have lasted ten times ten hours!" p. 67 In the afternoon, the prisoners cheerfully worked.
What does Elie mean by his quote? Why were the prisoners happy during this air raid where bombing are flying and landing everywhere? They could possibly all get bombed and die, except they were very happy to have the raid? Use examples from the story ( 10 sentences)

They were hungry and were waiting to eat some soup when the attack happened.
All the Jews were staring at the two pots full of soup trying not to eat some soup looking at it with anticipation.
One of the Jews that had bin working at camp for tree years crawled up to the pots full of soup and dove his head into the soup. They were all happy because the Germans were getting bombed and the Jews were satisfied.
It was revenge to them because the Germans were being were getting what they deserved full of joy to see the oppressor being bombed.
In his quote he means how he is saying how he is divining in the inside how he feels about what is going on. The prisoners weren't afraid of being bombed because they were going to be killed either by the Germans or by the bombes.Elie wanted the bombs to go on ten times more than it had happend.

I think that if I was in there situation and I had the chance to escape from prison i wouldn’t because sooner or later they would find me and things could end up to be worst. But since in the chapter is differently because some of the prisoners prefer to stay were they at than to get killed or to be torture from the people that are in charge. some people that have been in jail for a long time and had tried to escape they rather not too, because they know that if they ever get caught things would be worst for them, for example like if they want to get there life's straight they cant and even if they wanted to they would be living a hell life because all there life's would be running away or hiding from the cops, even people when they post up a reward to find a person there's more likely for them to be found. This is the way I think but there's been times when prisoners wont want to come out ever from jail because they don’t have to struggle has much as to be free this are the things that they would have to do once they were to be out of jail ,work, going to school, society. So they would prefer to be in jail to stop them from what is good for them.

They might have been kind of sacred to even try to make an escape. I thought that they might of wanted to die by the bombings, other than being killed by Germans. Every bomb that exploded filled them with joy and gave them new confidence in life. They were no longer afraid of death. If a bomb had fallen on the blocks, it alone would have claimed hundreds of victims on the spot. Elie was happy to see the whole works go up in fire, it would be revenge.

During an air raid on Buna, every prisoner was to go into their blocks, and the officers were to run to cover. With all the bombing, and no one to guard any of the streets, all the prisoners had a chance to run away. I think that since they’ve been prisoners for so long, they’ve basically been brainwashed to follow the rules. They know that they don’t want to die. Even though they’re sure that they have a chance to survive by escaping, they’re afraid to get caught with anything. No matter what kind of choice they have, an answer to anything could be death. They are really scared to escape. Escaping would just be too good to be true. The door is right there for them but they cant imagine themselves walking through it. They’ve basically been taken away from happiness. All they know is suffering and consequences. Just like on page 66, many prisoners are inside the kitchen hiding from the bombs, and there are two cauldrons full of hot soup. Hundreds of eyes are on the cauldrons, but yet everyone is afraid to step up and eat it. One man is actually daring to go up to the soup and eat some, and as he does it, more people begin to come up to it also. It shows that people will only act on it if someone does it first. It angers me because there are so many of them, they see the chances to get out of there, but they’re too afraid to take it. No one is talking, plotting, planning anything to get everyone free or even give them hope to escape. Either way they’ll die somehow. But its better to die trying to escape, rather than suffer and miss so many chances to be free. They’ll never know if those chances to get out will work unless they actually try it. They’ve noticed that they’ve always got caught doing things they’re not supposed to be doing, but that’s only because they’re taking chances when they shouldn’t be. Those bombs coming at them was the PERFECT time to escape. I’d rather get hit by a bomb than to let those SS officers kill me. I’ll die for my people, proving to them that I’m not afraid of them or death. And I believe all of the prisoners are STILL scared of death even though they’ve been acting as if they’re not afraid. But if they weren’t afraid, they would have acted upon everything a very long time ago. In the kitchen, Elie explains how everyone is happy that the bombing was coming, they could have used that energy to escape. The reason why they were so happy during the bombing was because they actually see that the Germans are being defeated. They also feel a sense of relief that the war might soon be over.

The raid to them signified the ending of the war. To them thhey must have seen it as God’s revenges on their captors it was there time to be saved. On pg. 67 it read, “I thought of my father. Butt I was glad all the same, to see all their works go up in flames.” This showed to me that they still feared somewhat for their safety but they were happy to see the Nazi camps go up in flames this must have been because of their still strong faith they probably saw that this as the vengeance they have been waiting for. I will now give some thought as why they did not think to run, before the bombing they were forced to stay in their blocks or they would be shot it is very likely that they had no idea of the abandoned posts which means they still feared they would be shot if they got out during the air raid. It is also likely that a fear of the bombs themselves, in my opinion they had a better chance of not getting hit in the camps rather than outside where there was explosions and pieces of broken things flying about. It also could have been because they have been starved and worked beyond exhaustion. The most likely reason that they did not escape they just cant run far not knowing their destination or if they could make it out.

During the air raid I think that the prisoners didn’t escape because they were afraid of getting caught. They were afraid that some one would see them and would then torture them. I mean it was bad enough already imagine if they did something wrong. I also think that they didn’t escape because they didn’t know were to go. Their families were separated. They had no one else to live for except for themselves. Also since they were under attack there was that possibility that they could die. Also I think that with everything that happened they were too afraid to do anything. Their minds didn’t work like that anymore now they only followed orders. The prisoners were happy that they were getting bombed at because then some Germans were going to die. They were probably hoping that the Germans were defeated. They didn’t care if they died as long as the Germans died with them.

I think the people didn’t make a run for it because they were too hungry, they didn’t have the strength to get up and just run. People were really skinny and very unhealthy and they were scared. They probably knew that the SS officers weren’t going to do anything, and it was the perfect time to make a run for it, but they were just scared. Many people would have preferred to get bombed by the airplanes then to just get killed by the Germans, but they didn’t have the courage to just get out there and do something like that. When Elie says that he wished it would have lasted ten times ten hours it means to me, that he wanted or probably would have ran out and taken his father and other people with him. The prisoners were happy because for that whole hour they weren’t getting beaten and they weren’t getting yelled at. They were also happy of the raid because if they would have gotten bombed they wouldn’t have had been suffering as they die, they would have just died right away or at least in a couple of hours, but the Germans would just torture them, so they would have preferred to get bombed.

They were getting ready to eat. When suddenly they attack them. Most of them were scared and some of them were not scared because they new they were getting attack by an other country and they were rather die by a bomb instead of getting cream mated. And there was people that were in not ready for it.

They did not escape because they were to scare of what the SS will do to them if they will get them and plus they saw this bunch of food and thought of eater but they were to much scare to do it. I think his fear was more stronger them anything and where they were was to big I think they will not know where to go. They were happy of the bombing because they thought probably by bombing they were going to die not that bad then by the Nazi killing them. The bombs were going probably not just killed the Jews people plus the SS that were there. The Jews wanted to see how the SS suffer like them. Another reason why they are happy is because is like a free time they have by not working. Not the SS to tell them anything what to do..

I think that they were just too scared to make an attempt to get away because if they were to get caught they would still be killed and maybe tortured in a worst way but i think that it would be worth it to try to escape because either way they're going to be killed and there might be a chance that they could escape and get away.

I think that the prisoners didn’t escape because probably they didn’t wanted to be free to see people and young children being torture, I assume that they just want to stay together since they had been and done lots of things they might just stay with each other. If I had the chance to escape I would have done it because if that’s the reason that they didn't wanted to escape. Pain is something that they would always see and deal with. I think that the quote refer to keep trying event thought dead is close to you don't to give up. To them it didn’t matter if they could had been bombed in the raid. And if they did they wouldn’t do all that.

Well what I think about all this is that there are explanation for this situations. I think that one of the reasons why the people didn’t leave was because they had doubts that they would be able to escape and if they got caught they would die. I think that the people were also scared of running and getting bombed at. I also think that the people thought that if they stayed they would eventually reunite with their families. I think that the people didn’t know what to do when the bombings began they were probably shock that they were seeing all this happen. I mean it is already shocking seeing people get shot at for anything imagine not only seeing that but seeing bombs get thrown. I also think many of them didn’t know were to go. They didn’t know if the regular civilians would help them or torture them as well and they didn’t have a house so they had no were to go. This are all the reasons why I think that the people missed the opportunity to escape.

The reason they did not run is because they were terrified of the possibility that a guard would see them. If a guard were to see them they would have bin tortured and the risk was tempting but not worth it if you valued your life. Another reason is because they hade no were to go. Elie was happy because he says he would have it last ten times ten hours, probably because during the rade the guards could not beat them yell at them or hurt them. They were in a sense free for this hour. They were fearless of the bombs because the bombs would kill them instantly and painlessly unlike the Germans. Anyone there would have witched for that horrible place to blow up. Or at least that’s what I think……..
