Elie had escaped death so many times. The first incident was when, they had the first ever selections happening. On page 39, a survived prisoner from the previous group comes through the crowd warning Elie and his father about the selections. “You’re 18, not 15” he says to Elie. And, “You’re 40, not 50.” He says to Elie’s father. Age was important to stay alive. If you were too young or too old, you were considered helpless and sent to the crematories immediately. Another time Elie escapes death is when Elie is wandering around the unit because his unit did not have to work. Elie finds one of the men that is supposed to be in charge having sex with a polish girl. Idek, the man that is in charge of the unit see’s Elie, because Elie is laughing at it. Idek then threatens Elie saying that he will soon learn to mind his own business. Elie will then be punished. Elie could have been killed, but instead, he was whipped on the back and stomach 25 times. Elie’s foot swells up and is full of puss. He is told that if he did not come any sooner, they might have to amputate his toes, foot, or maybe even his leg. Losing a body part like that would automatically say that he is incapable of working, and sent to the crematories. A rumor comes saying that the Russian army is coming, meaning that the camps will have to be evacuated. Elie is in the hospital, and a faceless man is telling him that everyone in the hospital is going straight to the crematories. Elie then decides to get out of there, not caring about his foot. But then he later finds out that the prisoners in the hospital were freed. Which is sad, because he would have been free, but maybe it’s a good thing because he wouldn’t have left his father behind. The doctor who operated on his foot gave him hope on surviving. The doctor was really nice and gained Elie’s trust. Elie’s father has changed a lot since the beginning of the book. Towards the end of the book, Elie’s father is getting really old. He’s close to not being able to survive anymore. He’s beginning to give up on trying to survive. The only thing that’s keeping him up everyday is seeing his son. It’s very sad to see him so low. Nothing is changing his mind about trying harder. I feel as though he wants to die. As if he’s giving up. If only he knew that the end is coming, and they will soon be free.

Eli has been in moments were he almost is going to died but he doesn’t. one time was when his right foot began to swell because of the cold so he was sent to get a examined by the doctor. This was in page 84. when this happen the doctor told him that he might probably amputated his leg. This mean to him if they will do that he might died because the Nazis will not want someone that was not going to be useful and he was not going to work no more so they might killed him. I think he haven’t died because he is just lucky. It could happen a lot of things to him but he haven’t died but at the same time I think god is teaching him a lesson that he is with him still. He is showing him that even dew he is not having faith no more he is still going protecting him anyways so he will see that god is still with him. When he was on the hospital he meets a guy that tells him rumors that the Russia people are going to be there. He also tell him that the SS are going to evacuate the other prisoners that are not on the hospital that the people that are in the hospital might died or might survive. So Eli thinks for a second that at this moments he wants to be with his dad so he decide to go look for his father and the other prisoners. At the end he hears that the people from the hospital got free but at least he is with his dad.

In the beginning of t he story Eli gets saved because the SS thought he was strong enough for work and that is why they didn’t send him to the crematory. He could have died when he was on his way to the first camp on those cattle cars they had to stay in. He could have gone crazy in there or just died. Another time is when one guy wanted to take his gold tooth away he could have killed him. He could have died at the air raid. He might have been sent to the crematory because of his leg. Every day there is a possibility that he might die. He might not survive. I think that he has survived because of fate and because of his struggle to live. I think that god had a purpose for him and the fact that Eli never gave up just helped him survived thru everything. When Eli got to the hospital he met that a Hungarian Jew . And he told him that he shouldn’t stay there for a long time because they made selections very often. He thought that he would be able to stay there because then he would be able to get more food and soup and he could recover. He could also help get food to his dad. He had an opportunity to stay there but he didn’t want to because he wanted to be with his father. They had to leave the camp because the Russians were coming. Eli’s dad is a good person. I think that he is really caring and strong. He is able to not eat and do what ever he can so his son has more food to eat so that he can survive. He knew that he had a really good chance that he was going to get sent to the crematory and he gave his son everything that he had left. I think that his relationship with Eli is growing stronger.

He has escaped death on many occasions. Elie has on many escaped why maybe it was fate but I don’t know why or how but it could have bin luck. The first time that he escaped was when he was told to lie about his age on page 39. another prisoner asked him how old he was and told him but the prisoner told him ‘ no not fifteen eighteen’ and asked his father how old he was and told him fifty the prisoner got furious and told him ‘no forty’. He told them that to keep them together. Elie was also saved by his wits. Eli's father is what really keeps him alive form the very begging not by helping him but by being their with him to help him mentally and emotionally. When Elis foot swells up and gets an operation. He begins to hear rumors about Russian army approaching. He gets out of the hospital because the prison in the hospital tells him that selections were more often than out side.

2. In this section of the book Night Elie he assumes he escapes death by leaving the hospital when the Russian attack was nearing and the Germans had to evacuate Buna, the concentration camp that Elie and his father were in. This is not the first time that Elie has escaped from what he thought was a noose narrowing around his neck. On page 39 there was a conversation with a former inmate of Auschwitz he had Elie lie about his age, my first assumption that he told him this so that he would be put with his father but looking back the prisoner might have been sparing him from the crematory as it said that several small children were burned, he may have also escaped the crematory when he decided to separate form his mother when they ordered men on the left women on the right if he had stayed with his mother. On page 42 he escaped death by denying his eagerness to run from the crematory and die death that he could control. On page 78-79 he escaped the selection by running trough the doctors office to prove that he was healthy and still useful to the camp. All this can be seen as destiny, luck, or God’s intervention. With the single trough of a die these same questions are asked is the die result meant to happen or is it just a sporadic outcome. I believe that God has some hand in luck. I see luck as gift of God because to me if the universe was just a sporadic outcome that there was no rhyme or reason them there is no point in going. My form of reasoning was shown in this section that was read, that without faith these people had nothing and therefore had no reason to keep fighting the reaper. If there is nothing left in the world than it becomes almost impossible to fight for nothing.
3. In the section of night that we read today it is shows Elie in the hospital. He is in the hospital because of his foot and he meets a very strange character that may have been at the hospital a long time or maybe just long enough to se a selection take place. He is warned by a the dieing man on page 84, “you mustn't rejoice to soon , my boy. There’s a selection here too. More often than outside. Germany doesn’t need any sick Jews.” This one section asks a lot of questions in regards to this man honesty and the actual cruelty at the camp. The cruelty at displayed in the book about the camp shows that they would incinerate the invalids to make room for the ones that would quickly recover. If they did make selections at the hospital how did he escape them did someone warn him of the selection and somehow convinced someone to leave the camp? Is this the same tactic being used on Elie? And the last and least likely reason for the dieing mans speech is that he actually want this boy to escape the crematory. This is the least likely because while in the camp they became survivalist and lying probably one of the tactics used to survive. While Elie was at the hospital the Red Army’s front neared Buna and they evacuated all the camp except for the people in the hospital and again the dieing man is warned of the crematory for all the invalids. On page 87 it read, “Sent to the crematory in a final batch” again the man’s true knowledge of the camp comes into question. It is unclear that his words made him leave the hospital and go with his block but I think it might have.
4. The relationship between Elie and his father is very strong he would follow his father to the end and so would the father for his son. He ask his father constantly on what to do and though his father seems to point in the wrong direction he still does not hate his dad. He knows that he only does what he thinks is best for his son . In a blinding fog 9 time out of ten you will pint in the wrong direction. In Buna all there is rumors mostly on their liberation which all are all farce all his father has to go by are these rumors and he can not see the over all out come all he wants to do is to make sure that his soon does not die in the camp or lose his humanity.

Elie thru out the story has cheated death many times. In the beginning of t he story Eli gets saved because the SS thought he was strong enough for work and that is why they didn’t send him to the crematory. On page 39, a survived prisoner from the previous group comes through the crowd warning Elie and his father about the selections. “You’re 18, not 15” he says to Elie. And, “You’re 40, not 50.” this helps them not only stay together, but stay alive. another incident that kept him alive was when he was told to run during selection so that he looked healthy and so they don’t take his number. when his foot gets infected its pretty much over for elie but luckily he find the doctor to be a Hungarian Jew. This makes him more kind. Instead of getting his leg amputated he gets it fixed with a and he goes on with his father. I think that elie has escape death because he of a series of luckily placed events I mean most of the Jews were able to prolong there suffering but its not like they could escape there inedible death, but some how elie has perhaps its faith.

In the hospital he meets an unpleasant Jew with no face. He is very doubtful about his faith and is I would say near insanity, his foot is very bad and infected so the doctor, the Hungarian Jew decides maybe an amputation will be needed. Fortunately for elie they did not have to do that and they fixed it. The next day he could have stayed and be rescued by the Russian red army but the chances were slim he did not want risk it. Another reason is he could not bear to leave his father alone ….

the way I would describe elies dad is a very worry some guy never at ease but always trying to keep a calm image, probably to keep his son from worrying. he can be very responsible and very loving but at the same time he can be cold. His relationship with his son is very neutral I would say . At times he doesn't even treat him like a son but like an adult. Despise this he still loves him and they have grown more attached than ever.

On page seventy-nine elie is trying to not get selected. If you got selected you would get put into the crematory. Then new people were brought to take over your job. They replace you with younger stronger people that eventually end up picking up your dead body. On page eighty four he is picking up the frozen bodies that felt that when you touch them that your hands felt that they were going to get attached to the bodies. He eventually got a infection on his foot so he went to see the doctor. He was happy to know that the doctor was Jewish. If he had never went to see him it would have got worse. The doctor said they might have had to amputate his leg. Elie had to get an operation right away. His operation lasted an hour with out him under going till he finally under went. When he awoke he was very glad to see the doctor leaning beside him. Then he remembered about his leg. He got a cold sweat from his for head. He was going to ask the doctor about his leg that he didn’t feel but instead he said that he was thirsty. The doctor tolled a nears to get him some water. Elie finally got the courage to ask about the operation the doctor said that he wouldn’t be able to walk for a few weeks. A faceless man laying down next to him kept telling him that it was harder in the hospital. That there was more selections in the hospital than there is out side. Elie got frighten and their was some roomers that the British army was near. Elie wanted to get back with his dad because he didn’t want to get separated from his dad. His dad didn’t know if they should both go to the hospital or get evacuated with the rest of the Jewish people. They finally made a diction to go with the rest of them to Buna another concentration camp. After they arrived at the other concentration camp they had found out that the people at the hospital had gotten liberated by the British army.

well he tried to escape but when he was trying to he hurt himself. He had almost had his leg cut off. To me this tells me that he would do anything so that he could be free. I think that he is just lucky that he is still a live because something else could had happened to him and wouldn’t be able to deal with the situation. I also think that is really rare when people have luck in the good and bad moments this has happened to me in a way wear I been so closed in dieing but is just my luck that I have ,but I always have the feeling that this luck at some point wont last long. He is really lucky to be a live now that he is at the hospital he should think that is not worth to be free is he Is going to put his life into it. It is better for him to stay were his at.

The person that he meets at the hospital is his doctor he was Jewish he was one of them. This doctor had decided for him to get an operation he was glad that it was him who had made his choice. The hospital were he was at wasn’t bad had he thought it was he was well treated with good food better to what gets at the other place, from the food that he was receiving he would safe part of his bread to give it to his dad.

The relation between elies dad and his son has become better between them since his son is at the hospital I think they had come more closer than ever. Ever since they heard the news in the hospital it got both of them thinking they didn’t know what to do. He would ask his father but he wouldn’t give an answer to him. His son didn’t wanted to leave because he wanted to thank the doctor for what he did with his leg.

He tried to escape but in the process he got injured. His leg almost came off in the midst of all this. He must want to really be free. I feel sorry for this man he did nothing wrong to deserve that kind of treatment. He has witnessed a lot of things. A lot of things happened to him. Yeah sure he still has his life, but he has to live with the memory. The man he had met was a doctor. He was a Jewish doctor so he was cool. His relationship with his dad increased in a good way.

I think that there are many reasons why Eli still hasn't died. One of the reasons why I think that Eli hasn't die is because he has been lucky and god doesn't want him to die. One of the times that he got saved was in the beginning of the story when he was supposed to say his age but one of the former prisoners told him to lie about his age so he could survive. So he lied and they were going to send him to the crematory and he was very close to going in but he got lucky and didn’t get send in. another time that he got saved was when they wanted to take out his golden tooth but the dentist that wanted to take out the tooth got transferred before he did take it out. Another time that Eli got saved was when they were picking out people he ran fast and they didn’t pick him. I think that he has been really lucky to be alive and shouldn’t blame god for anything else but he should thank him for keeping him alive. I also think that he got really lucky when he got surgery in his leg because if he wouldn’t have gotten surgery done then he would have no leg. I think that Eli and his dad are really close to each other. One of the reasons why I think that is because his dad tried his best to go see his son before anything happened to him and he gave him the only things that he had so that way at least he left something behind with his son.

Elie has been through a lot. Some of the times that he has been almost dead are the times when he has had to go through the selections. Those happen every so often and the only reason they make or have those are just to make sure that they have Jews that are hard working or that can work for something. I think it was fate, I think it was meant to be for people to survive so they can tell their stories, to let people know how everything can exist in this world. How people can be crazy or not crazy but just their beliefs are different and they can do harm to many other people. The only reason that he didn’t stay in the hospital to heal was because he wanted to be with his father. Yes he could have escaped with the Russians when they got there but he wanted to be with his father. He also met the Hungarian Jew who had his face covered in the sheet. He had told Elizer about the Russians and about how they were going to get them out of there. He had new hope and he was very glad they were about to get out of the living hell he was in, but if he was going to be free he wanted to be with his father. The relationship with Elie and his father are very good. They have a very close bond and they try to take care of each other. They try to stick together so they wont be alone, they try to keep everything just so cool, honest and just try to stay alive.

Czechoslovakia- A country in Europe.
Kaddish- It is a prayer that Jewish people say before they’re going to die.
Fasting- It is when people don’t eat for a while.
I think he has escaped death because he has a lot of luck. Like When they tested him. He ran as fastest he could and they didn’t write his number down and he survived. I think that was luck also. His dad has been lucky also. He actually passed two selections. The boy wasn’t so lucky either, because if he would of stayed in the hospital, the Russians would have set him free. He also gave up his gold crown, for his life. They also took his shoes. All of this has been luck.
When he is in the hospital, he meets a Hungarian Jew. He tells him to leave and save himself. I think he told him that because he wanted the boys bed. So the boy listens to him. Him and his father are no longer at Buna. They have them two rations and sent them somewhere, they don’t know where they are going. They’re scared because Hitler said he would exterminate all the Jew’s by mindnight.
He is a person that really cares about his son, and wants him to live.
I think their relationship changed a lot. When the boy was small, they were really close. As he started to grow up their relationship changed a lot. He started caring less about his father.

Decayed: something rotten There was many bodies that were decayed at the camps.
Consume: to eat or digest The people at the camp had little food to consume.
Agony: pain or feeling of hurt The people would scream in agony will in the furnace.

I think that Elie’s father is escaping death but then again think that it is luck. I think it was destiny for him to survive, whether it’s for some purposes in the future of the book or just for Elie but he’s still alive for some mysterious reason. Other than the fact that he’s getting lucky he should be dead, to me. He’s always in the right places at the right times or just so happens to leave places at the right time. It’s just not likely for anyone unless he/she had a purpose. I think that later in the story or Elie’s life that he’s going to teach someone something that’s important.
